Terms of Use
SyllabusAI is operated by Ryan (“we,” “us,” “SyllabusAI”). These Terms of Use govern your access to and use of SyllabusAI (the “Service”). By creating an account or using the Service, you agree to these Terms. If you don’t agree, don’t use the Service.
1. What SyllabusAI does
SyllabusAI lets you upload a course syllabus (PDF), automatically extracts deadlines and grade weights from it using an AI model, and gives you tools to track deadlines and calculate your grade as you enter marks. You can also add this information manually.
2. Who can use it
You must be at least 16 years old to create an account. If you’re under the age of majority where you live, you confirm you have a parent or guardian’s permission to agree to these Terms.
3. Your account
You’re responsible for the accuracy of the information you provide and for keeping your login credentials secure. One account per person. You’re responsible for activity that happens under your account.
4. Your content
You keep ownership of the syllabi you upload and the course, deadline, and grade information you enter or that gets extracted (“Your Content”). By uploading or entering it, you give us permission to store, process, and display it back to you as part of operating the Service — including sending uploaded PDFs to our AI extraction provider, described below. We don’t use Your Content to train AI models, sell it, or share it with anyone except as described in our Privacy Policy.
Only upload material you have the right to upload — in practice, this means your own course syllabi. Don’t upload anything unlawful, someone else’s private information, or content you don’t have permission to share.
5. AI extraction isn’t perfect
When you upload a syllabus, we use a third-party AI model (currently Anthropic’s Claude) to read it and pull out assessments, due dates, and grade weights. AI extraction can miss items, misread dates, or get weights wrong — especially on unusual formats or scanned documents. You review and can edit everything before it’s saved, and you’re responsible for checking it against your actual course syllabus and instructor communications. SyllabusAI is a planning tool, not an official academic record— it doesn’t replace your institution’s systems, and we’re not responsible for a missed deadline or grade miscalculation that results from an extraction error, a manual entry error, or your syllabus changing after you uploaded it.
6. Payment & the Semester Pass
The free plan covers a limited number of active courses and syllabus uploads. The paid “Semester Pass” is a one-time charge that covers one academic term — it is not a recurring subscription and does not auto-renew. Payments are processed by Stripe; we never see or store your card details. Pricing is shown before you pay. Charges are generally final — contact support@syllabusai.caif something went wrong and we’ll sort it out. You can downgrade back to the free plan at any time from your account settings; nothing is deleted when you do.
7. Acceptable use
Don’t use the Service to:
- Upload malware, or content that isn’t actually a course syllabus, to abuse the extraction pipeline
- Attempt to bypass usage limits, security controls, or access other students’ data
- Scrape, reverse-engineer, or resell the Service
- Use the Service in any way that violates applicable law or your institution’s academic policies
8. Ending your account
You can delete your account at any time from Account settings. This permanently deletes your courses, assessments, grades, and profile — there’s no recovery. We may suspend or terminate accounts that violate these Terms.
9. Disclaimers & liability
The Service is provided “as is,” without warranties of any kind. To the maximum extent the law allows, SyllabusAI isn’t liable for indirect, incidental, or consequential damages — including a missed deadline, an inaccurate grade projection, or lost data — arising from your use of the Service. Our total liability for any claim is limited to the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim arose, or $50, whichever is greater.
10. Changes to these Terms
We may update these Terms as the Service changes. We’ll update the date at the top of this page; if a change is material, we’ll make a reasonable effort to let you know.
11. Governing law & where these Terms apply
These Terms, and anything arising out of your use of the Service, are governed by the laws of British Columbia, Canada and the federal laws of Canada applicable in it, without regard to conflict-of-laws principles. Any dispute that can’t be resolved directly is subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts located in British Columbia, and you consent to that jurisdiction.
SyllabusAI is available to students across Canada and in the United States, and we intend it to stay that way. Using the Service from outside British Columbia doesn’t change which law applies to these Terms. That said, if the mandatory consumer-protection law of your own province, state, or territory gives you rights that can’t be waived by contract, nothing here takes those rights away — this section applies only to the extent that law allows.
Note for Ryan: this is a reasonable, standard-form choice-of-law clause, not a substitute for a lawyer. It should hold up fine for a solo-operator BC business serving Canadian and U.S. students at this stage. The one thing worth a real legal review before you scale U.S. marketing spend specifically (not just organic U.S. signups) is whether any state you’re actively targeting has a consumer-protection statute that overrides an out-of-province choice-of-law clause for its residents — California and a few others are the usual examples. Quebec has similar carve-outs within Canada. Nothing to act on today; just flagging it for later.
